About Shenzhen  

Established in 1979, Shenzhen has transformed, in only three decades, from a fishing village to an uprising and dynamic city with a competitive economy, first class facilities, desirable ecological environment, well-developed social civilization and sound legal systems. It has thus created a miracle in the developmental history of global cities.  It was only a small frontier town with a population of less than 30,000 in 1980, when the city was initially founded. Today, it has developed into a metropolis, with an approximate population of 14 million. That is a 467 times increase in just three short decades. 

Shenzhen is a city with a moderate climate, developed economy and low-carbon environment, is a major gateway to communication between China and the world.

In addition to being an economic powerhouse, Shenzhen is a livable city and a wonderful tourist destination, with strong humanistic culture and desirable ecological environment. The city’s spirit can be fully expressed by 4 Es, "Encouraging innovation, Excusing failure, Embracing honesty, and Excellence pursuing". Shenzhen is as warm as amicable with seasonal flowers and carpet-like grasslands. It is crowned as China’s Pilot City in Environmental Protection, Nations in Boom, UNEP’s Global 500 Roll, etc.

 

 

Geography

The total area of Shenzhen is 1,991.64 square kilometers. Its longitude lies between 113.46 and 114.37 degrees east and latitude between 22.27 and 22.52 degrees north. Sitting south of the Tropic of Cancer, it is in southern Guangdong Province. It is bordered by Dongguan and Huizhou in the north, Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay in the east and the Lingding Sea and the mouth of the Pearl River in the west. Shenzhen has more than 310 rivers and streams, which are associated with the hydrographic systems of the Dongjiang River, coastal bays and the Pearl River mouth.

Shenzhen is an ecological garden city, with half of the total area within a demarcation line for nature protection where construction is banned. The urban greenbelt coverage in developed areas is 45.04 percent.

Shenzhen is a picturesque coastal city, has 230 kilometers of the coastline along the Dapeng Peninsula was named one of the eight most beautiful coasts in China by Chinese National Geography magazine. Shenzhen has more than 20 public beaches, some of which are linked by seaside walkways.

 Climate

Shenzhen has a subtropical marine climate. The weather is generally temperate to mild, with plenty of rain and sunshine. The annual average temperature is 22.4 degrees Celsius. The yearly rainfall totals 1,933.3 millimeters and the average number of hours of sunshine is 2,120.5.

Demographics

There had been migration to southern Guangdong and what is now Shenzhen since the late Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) but the numbers increased dramatically after Shenzhen was established. By the end of 2011, the permanent resident population reached 10.55 million.

Languages

The primary language is Mandarin. Cantonese and English are also widely used.

Migrant Culture

As a city of migrants, Shenzhen is open-minded, tolerant and innovative. It is an ideal place for domestic and international talent to start businesses.

Official Trees and Flower

The litchi and mangrove are Shenzhen's official trees and bougainvillea is the official flower.

Administrative jurisdiction

Shenzhen is a sub-provincial city. It has direct jurisdiction over six districts and four new areas: Luohu, Futian, Nanshan, Yantian, Bao’an and Longgang districts, and Guangming, Pingshan, Longhua and Dapeng new areas.
